Which Shoes Should You Wear for a Beach Wedding?

I'm usually a fan of a heeled shoefor a wedding, but the beach is one place where a high heel--or any shoe that has a barrier to balance in the sand--is an impediment, which is the last thing you want on your wedding day! I often recommend a wedge heel for an outside wedding, but on a sandy beach, unless the wedge heel is super-low ( i.e., under an inch) it is probably going to cause some trouble.

Going barefoot is always an option, but for those who want a little something for their feet that goes beyond the standard rubber flip-flop, I suggest the following selections of embellished beach sandals. These are designer styles, and worthy of a special wedding day. They have the perfect amount of chic ornamentationfor brides wanting some special details, and they could also work for wedding guests, bridesmaids, and mothers at a beach wedding. More picks below!

FAQs

Can you wear sandals to a beach wedding? ›

Yes, sandals are a great choice for beach wedding attire. Just make sure they are not too casual or flip flops.

Are sandals wedding appropriate? ›

Formal: Strappy sandals or closed-toe pumps are a safe bet for a more formal wedding. Beach: Toe ring sandals or pad sandals are perfect for a beach wedding.

Do brides go barefoot for beach wedding? ›

Dress shoes and high heels will make walking in the sand difficult, and might limit some of your possibilities for more dramatic and beautiful photos. Some of our brides like to opt for jewelry for their feet instead of shoes, but many of our couples go barefoot, and love it!

What to wear for a beach wedding? ›

It's still a good idea to avoid super-short dresses for beach weddings since wind can be a factor. Skip the street shoes and flip-flops—sandals, wedges and chunky heels that aren't too dressy will be perfect. Also, one or two pieces of bright, playful jewelry can complement your casual beach wedding attire.

What not to wear to a beach wedding? ›

In general, stick with lighter colors and/or bold prints, and absolutely avoid denim, cargo, swim shorts, and cotton T-shirts. This is also the only instance when sandals may be acceptable, but ensure your feet are well-manicured before considering an open-toe look. If not, wear a deck shoe or loafer, never sneakers.

What kind of sandals do you wear to the beach? ›

Look for waterproof materials

Sandals made with plastic materials like TPU, EVA foam, and rubber repel water and dry quickly. Even sandals made with fabric like polyester and neoprene can still be comfortable while wet and quick-drying.

Can you wear open-toed shoes to a wedding? ›

Of course a closed-toe wedding shoe is recommended for cooler climates; however, for warmer wedding days, open-toe shoes are the norm. For black-tie weddings, closed-toe shoes are little more expected, but not a must. I recommend keeping an open mind on closed-toe and open-toe shoes.

Do you take your shoes off at a beach wedding? ›

Traditional heels will sink in the sand; opt for sandals, wedges, or bare feet instead. Beach weddings tend to be much more casual, so be sure keep that in mind when you're shopping for your wedding dress.

What style of wedding dress is best for a beach wedding? ›

A-line, sheath, and empire waist dresses are great options, as they offer a relaxed and graceful look. Additionally, the style of your beach wedding gown will likely also be influenced by the level of formality you are expecting on your wedding day.

Brides getting married in the sand should look for flat sandals and espadrilles, open-toed slides, and flip-flops that feel elevated. These styles are foolproof options for safely walking across the sand.

What is the best hairstyle for a beach wedding? ›

For a romantic and ethereal look, a braided updo is an excellent choice for your beach wedding! This style keeps your hair off your face and neck, ensuring you stay cool and comfortable throughout the day. Choose from a variety of braided updos, such as a fishtail braid, a loose boho braid, or a twisted braided bun.

Can I wear flip-flops to a summer wedding? ›

That said, you do have a little more wiggle room when it comes to white shoes for modern, laid-back weddings, depending on the type of outfit you choose to wear. “White shoes can be acceptable if they're not overly prominent and are part of a well-coordinated outfit," shares Klingman.
